INSTALLING OSAS 7.0

New information about OSAS 7.0 installation has been made available.  What follows are some  “hands-on” tips on the management of the installation of OSAS 7.0

First of all, the New OSAS BBJ Version requires a free download of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) from www.java.sun.com.

It is a Mix-and-Match platform product.  This means that you can have a Windows Server, or a Linux Server, or a UNIX Server, AND attach to these servers various kinds of workstations, thin clients, Windows workstations, Macintosh workstations, PCs running Linux, and/or Windows and all kinds of variations of this.  You can even have 2 Windows PCs, one Linux machine and the Server can be a Windows 2003 Server PC.

A little about installation:

You have to be at the Server to install OSAS 7.0.
You must first create a user to run BBJ Services – should be part of the Administrator Group to start with for the installation – after installation is complete, this user doesn’t need admin privileges but does need Read/Write for the whole OSAS folder (configured in the BBJ Admin group).
You must remove the old Basis License before installing the 7.0 License.  What this means is that a Weekend would be a good choice to do this.

About Licenses:

The HOST ID consists of the word COMPOSITE followed by numbers that are determined by
Network card, Hard Disk and various other components.  If you install on a laptop, please check the box:  “This is a notebook computer” otherwise it will give all kinds of error once you disconnect from the network.

Server Install:

You can have an Application Server, Data Server or Combined (if both are on the same PC which is OK).

Select Full or Custom (New installation should be Full).  Username and password:  Use the username set up in Administrator Group per above.
Check applications to install.
In 7.0 all applications are selected in the beginning and there are checkboxes for them.  They are installed in the first, and therefore longer, installation process, but then you won’t have to do RM and Installation for each application separately.
More details to follow when you are ready to do your install.

There are some higher hardware requirements with OSAS 7.0 because of the BBj installation.
In most cases we’d recommend going with the Combined Server.  That means that your Server needs to have at least 2.0 GHz processor, a minimum of 1.0 GB of RAM, and minimum free hard disk space of 1 GB.

Your workstations should have processors of 1.2 GHz speed or faster, a minimum of 256 MB of RAM and at least 200 MB of free hard disk space. You need to check out all your the workstations to make sure they fulfill these requirements.
If you have no modifications to your system, we are ready to send you or install your 7.0 fulfillment whenever you are.

There are no additional software charges for OSAS 7.0 – as long as your Maintenance agreement is current.  Everything in OSAS 7.0 is included in that agreement.  But before we send you your OSAS 7.0 – please make a deployment plan.   If we could be of any help, please let us know.
If you have modifications, let’s review to see what you still want to keep and we can make a time plan!
